A dermoid cyst, medically known as a mature cystic teratoma, is one of the most common types of ovarian tumours seen in women of reproductive age. Unlike typical ovarian cysts, dermoid cysts are unique — they can contain tissues such as hair, skin, fat, and even teeth, as they develop from germ cells (cells that form eggs).
While dermoid cysts are almost always benign, they do require medical attention because of their potential to grow large, twist the ovary (torsion), or rupture if left untreated.
Dermoid cysts develop from totipotent germ cells in the ovary — cells that have the ability to develop into various tissue types. They are present from birth in most cases, though they are often discovered incidentally during an ultrasound or pelvic examination in adulthood. They are not caused by lifestyle factors and are not contagious.
Many women with small dermoid cysts experience no symptoms at all. Larger cysts or complications can cause:
If you experience sudden, sharp pelvic pain, seek medical help immediately.
Dr. Kumudini Devi uses a combination of the following to diagnose dermoid cysts:
The standard treatment for a dermoid cyst is surgical removal. Dr. Kumudini Devi specialises in laparoscopic cystectomy — a minimally invasive procedure that removes the cyst while preserving the healthy ovarian tissue.
For very large cysts or cases requiring additional evaluation, open surgery (laparotomy) may be considered.
Recurrence is uncommon but possible. Regular follow-up ultrasounds after treatment are advised to monitor ovarian health. Dr. Kumudini Devi ensures a structured follow-up plan for all her patients.
Most dermoid cysts are benign and not life-threatening. However, they can cause complications like torsion or rupture if they grow large, so timely treatment is recommended.
If treated with a fertility-preserving laparoscopic cystectomy, fertility is generally not affected. Dr. Kumudini Devi gives special consideration to younger women and those planning a pregnancy.
Unlike functional cysts, dermoid cysts do not resolve on their own and typically require surgical removal.
Most patients recover within 1–2 weeks after laparoscopic removal and can resume daily activities shortly after.
If you have been diagnosed with a dermoid cyst or ovarian tumour, or if your ultrasound has flagged an abnormality, Dr. Kotu Kumudini Devi is here to guide you through every step — from diagnosis to recovery.
