Laparoscopy

A gynecological laparoscopy offers a close examination of the pelvic region, including the fallopian tubes, ovaries, and uterus, serving both diagnostic and treatment purposes.

Typically conducted under general anesthesia, laparoscopy allows for unconsciousness during the procedure while enabling same-day discharge. After administering anesthesia, a catheter collects urine, followed by the introduction of carbon dioxide gas into the abdomen using a small needle. This gas maintains space between the abdominal wall and organs, minimizing the risk of injury. A small incision in the navel facilitates the insertion of a laparoscope, transmitting organ images to a screen for clear visualization. Depending on the procedure type, diagnoses may conclude with the examination, while surgeries require additional incisions for instrument insertion, guided by the laparoscope.

Laparoscopy proves beneficial for various conditions, including unexplained infertility, pelvic pain, history of pelvic infections, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts or tumors, ectopic pregnancy, pelvic abscess, adhesions, inflammatory disease, and reproductive cancers.

Some treatment options via laparoscopy encompass hysterectomy, ovary removal, cyst and fibroid removal, blocking blood flow to fibroids, endometrial tissue ablation for endometriosis, adhesion removal, tubal ligation reversal, Burch procedure for incontinence, and vault suspension for a prolapsed uterus.

Hysteroscopy involves the examination of the uterine cavity using a slender telescope inserted through the vagina and cervix under general anesthesia. The surgeon inspects the womb lining, projecting images onto a screen via a camera attached to the telescope.

Operative hysteroscopy addresses conditions like polyps, fibroids, adhesions (Asherman’s Syndrome), septums, and abnormal bleeding, aiding in diagnosis and treatment.

The timing of hysteroscopy is often scheduled within the first week post-menstruation to ensure optimal visualization. It's also employed to investigate unexplained bleeding or spotting in postmenopausal women.
