What is Tubal Ligation in Women?

Permanent contraception, known as sterilization, involves a procedure called tubal ligation. It entails closing or cutting the fallopian tubes, preventing sperm from reaching an egg for fertilization.

Procedure for Tubal Ligation:

  • The fallopian tubes are closed using clips, rings, or by cutting and tying.
  • Typically, a small incision near the belly button allows the insertion of a tiny telescope called a laparoscope. The tubes are then closed through another small incision near the pubic hair. In cases where a laparoscope isn’t feasible, a longer incision near the pubic hair might be necessary.
  • Tubal ligation procedures are performed in hospitals under general anesthesia. Depending on the specific method, it could be a day surgery or might require a hospital stay of one to two days.

Effectiveness of Tubal Ligation:

The failure rate for tubal ligation is approximately one in 200 cases.

Reversibility of Tubal Ligation:

Reversing tubal ligation isn’t always feasible, and the reversal procedure isn’t 100% effective. Making a careful and informed decision without external pressure significantly reduces the likelihood of regret.

Consent for Tubal Ligation:

It's advisable to have a comprehensive discussion about sterilization with your partner, as both parties are affected by this decision.
